Wrasses | Reef Chronicle

Wrasses

Wrasses can be found throughout the Atlantic and the Indo-Pacific in both temperate and tropical seas. Many are reef-associated, and many fulfill important ecological functions within the ecosystems in which they live. This species of fish is one of the largest, second to gobies.

Many Wrasses are considered reef safe and actually play important reef roles in the wild, but this is a very large species of fish with many many types who are not reef safe, so it is very important that you do your research on each kind before making a purchase.

The more common species of Wrasses, such as the 6-line wrasse, are very hardy creatures and active additions to any tank. This type of wrasse will also play a clean-up role in your tank, but may be a menace to smaller crustaceans and shrimp.
