Angler fish and Frogfish

Angler fish are marine fish that are commonly mistaken for being only found in the depths of the ocean. These strange looking fish are actually found in almost all areas of the ocean. Angler fish are named so because they are equipped with a small appendage that looks like a piece of bait, which it uses to lure unsuspecting fish to its mouth. Because it uses this appendage like a fishing pole, it was given the name angler.

Most anglers and frog fish are reef safe, but these are predatory carnivorous animals and should be introduced into any fish tank with extreme caution. These fish are capable of opening their mouths very wide and have even been known to eat fish almost twice its own size.

These fish are bottom dwellers and spend most of the day using their camouflage to disappear into the rock work as to either hide from predators, or attract prey. This species of fish’s pelvic fins have evolved into feet like appendages which it uses to anchor and move itself around the bottom of reefs. They come in all shapes, sizes and colors, and can also be quite expensive.

Overall, frog fish and anglers are very interesting fish, but can be a detriment to your reef if not added with the correct tank mates. Also, it is important to remember not to overfeed this fish because it may get to a point where it will not eat and the cause of which is undetermined. Feeder shrimp are a great meal for saltwater anglers and frog fish.
