While many people have had success keeping a lobster in a reef tank, they can be detrimental. It is recommended that if you do add a lobster to your system, you do so using great caution.
These animals are very secretive and usually do not show themselves throughout the daylight hours. However, they will come out during feeding time. These animals are scavengers by nature and are nocturnal. During the night, they have been know to stalk sleeping fish or other animals in your tank. As far as I know from reading, these animals will eat regular food pellets or meaty pieces of fish. All Reef Lobsters are very territorial and aggressive towards each other, so only one specimen, or a mated pair should be kept per tank. It is sensitive to high levels of copper-based medications.
As far as I know, there is only one commonly known reef compatible species of lobster, the Purple Reef Lobster. This invert has beautiful coloring and only grows to a maximum length of about 5 inches.
