Zoanthids

Zoanthids are some of the most popular and beautifully colored corals in the marine aquarium hobby. Zoa’s, as they are generally called, are often very brightly and multi-colored. These corals grow very quickly and are very hardy making them one of the perfect choices for beginners in the hobby. However, because some of the colors and types are so extravagant and some are very rare, they are also sometimes choice corals for even the most experienced reef collectors.

Caring for your zoanthid polyps is relatively easy. Most host symbiotic zooxanthellae in their tissue, which create food through photosynthesis. Given the right lighting conditions and good water parameters, your zoanthid polyps should do fine and grow/spread quickly. However, although it is known that zoanthids do not require any supplemental feedings, the reality is that nearly all zooanthids rely on particulate food and plankton capture to sustain their metabolism. As a result, nearly all should be target fed in captivity.

Zoanthids will thrive in almost all types of marine lighting, but to achieve maximum growth and color, metal halide or t-5 will be the best choice.

In conclusion, zoanthids are a relatively easy coral to keep and is very hardy. Because of this fact, they make a good addition to any first time reefers tank, but due to the rarity of some of the polyps, it brings the more experienced people in too. In short, zoa polyps offer something for everyone in the aquarium hobby.
